Pollution-free, clean and lush green environs greet you as you arrive in Vallabh Vidyanagar and Sardar Patel University campus. The University today spreads over a total land mass of 86 acres with a main campus and 4 satellite campuses.

The main campus, which houses the University Administrative Office with offices of all the important University Officials, all the sections of the University, Old Senate Hall and Syndicate room, besides SC/ST Cell, External Courses Cell, IQAC, International Students Centre, is spread over 21.060 acres, with a built-up are of 85,253.10 sq.mts.

Flanking the Main Administrative Office are Departments like Materials Science, and Chemistry on the one side, and Centre for Interdisciplinary Studies in Science and Technology (CISST), Pharmaceutical Sciences, Social Work, Business Studies, Mathematics, and Statistics on the other. Behind the Building that houses the Departments of Mathematics, Business Studies and Statistics is a four-storeyed building which houses Bhaikaka Library (University Library), and down the road from there, is the Department of Home Science, University Press, University Canteen, Animal House of the Biosciences.

The University Road divides the Main Administrative Building from the rest of the buildings opposite it that house Departments like Physics, G H Patel Computer Centre, M P Patel Auditorium, and Humanities Building, which houses Departments of English, Gujarati, Sanskrit, History, Political Science, Psychology, and Sociology. Behind the Humanities Building, we have the Department of Hindi in a separate building, University Museum, Complex housing Guest Houses and Guest Hostels and University Health Centre on the one side; and USIC, New Women’s Hostel on the floor above the USIC, M B Patel College of Education, University Ladies Hostel and NRI Ladies Hostel on the other.

A road divides the other part which has the Vice Chancellor’s lodge. As one turns on the road leading to the entrance of the Chemistry Department, on the other side, we have the Department of Electronics and N V Patel Postgraduate Department of Communication and Media Studies in the same row as ‘Savita’ Bungalow (the late H M Patel and his family’s residence). As one moves down that road and takes a turn to the right and down the road on the left is H M Patel Postgraduate Institute of Rural Economics, which is a three-storeyed building, housing Department of Economics, Agro-Economics Research Centre (Gujarat and Rajasthan), and Cost of Cultivation Cell.

Satellite Campus-1, which Houses the BRD School of Biosciences: a three-storeyed building, Physical Education Section of the University, Yugpurush Vivekananda (YUVI) Sports Complex, and Sardar Patel Maidan, is spread over 30.000 acres, with a built-up area of 1,21,406.00 sq.mts.

Satellite Campus-2, which houses the University Staff Colony, is spread over 28.930 acres, with a built-up area of 1,17,074.34 sq.mts. Within the University Colony, there are six Hostels: MBA NRI Hostel, Nehru Hall, CTE Hostel, SSF Hostel – single seated flat-type rooms for research scholars, BSc BEd Hostel, and Eklavya Hostel for SC/ST students; Kendriya Vidyalaya, G H Patel Institute of Business Management (MBA Department), University Cooperative Store, Flour Mill, Vallabh Sevashram, Botanical Garden (with some very rare plants and creepers), Water Tank and supply facility, besides A, B, C, H, D, E, F, G, I, J, and T-type Quarters for University Employees: Teaching, Administrative, and Class-IV Staff.

Satellite Campus-3, situated at some distance behind the University Staff Colony across a road, is a large campus, spread over 3.148 acres, with a built-up area of 12,739.50 sq.mts, which houses G H Patel Postgraduate Institute of Computer Science and Technology (Department of Computer and Technology).

Satellite Campus-4, situated at some distance, way behind the University Staff Colony, houses the Kendriya Vidyalaya Staff Quarters and adjoining land, which is spread over 2.849 acres, with a built-up area of 11,529.50 sq.mts.

Main Campus

University Administrative Office

The University Administrative Office is a three-storeyed building with the Vice Chancellor’s office at the back between the ground floor and first floor, and all sections of the University Office: Accounts Section and CAO Office, Stores Section, Despatch Section, EPABX Room; Enquiry Counter, Syndicate Room, Development Officer’s Office etc in the two wings from the entrance on the ground floor. The first floor houses Examination Section (2), Committee Room, Assistant Registrar’s Office, Deputy Registrar’s Office, Exam Reform Unit Office, Examination Section (1), and Academic Section; General Section, PA’s Office, Registrar’s Office, and Establishment Section (2 rooms) on the first floor. Deputy Registrar’s Office, SC/ST Cell, External Cell, International Students Centre, and Syndicate Section; Deputy Registrar’s Office, UGC Section, and Internal Quality Assurance Cell on the second floor.

Right beneath the Vice Chancellor’s Office and the Old Senate Hall opposite it is the Admission Cell for External Courses on the one side and parking space for vehicles of the Officers of the University.

Gyanoday Pariksha Bhavan

Gyanoday Pariksha Bhavan, a five-storeyed building, is situated behind the Main Administrative Office. The Ground floor of the building has parking space and a waiting lodge. The first floor is a multiple purpose hall divided into two sections. One part of it is the New Senate Hall, and the other part is used for holding meetings, and organizing workshops, seminars, conferences etc. The second, third and the fourth floors are of the same size as the two sections on the first floor. These are used to hold University Examinations. The entire building is air-conditioned and is covered by CCTV surveillance system. It has been furnished with latest furniture like spaciously designed modern benches. It has been built of earthquake-resistant RCC structure, fully equipped with sound proof public address system, 36 lockers and 6 latest display systems. Each floor has beautiful cabin for supervisors to monitor students taking the examination, drinking water facility, common waiting room for boys and girls, storing facility, and two offices with computer networking facility, thus a total of 8 offices on all the three floors taken together. The large halls on each of these floors can accommodate 700 students at a time, and thus 2100 students can take their examinations at a time. 4200 students can take their exams in two sessions on any given day: 10 am to 1.00 pm, and 2.00 pm to 5.00 pm.

Research Centre

Agro-Economic Research Centre for Gujarat and Rajasthan (AERC)

The Ministry of Agriculture, Government of India established AERC at Vallabh Vidyanagar as an associated institution of Sardar Patel University in 1961. The Centre is fully funded by the Ministry of Agriculture, Government of India, and it operates under the administrative controller of Vice-Chancellor. This is one of the 15 AERC Centres/Units established by the Government of India. The centre has been functioning in close collaboration with the Department of Economics, Sardar Patel University ever since its inception. One of the senior members of the faculty in the Department of Economics guides and supervises its activities as its Honorary Director. This association has been mutually beneficial to the Centre and the Department, with the result that it has helped the Department strengthen its teaching and research in Economics substantially. The Centre has by now completed 159 problem-oriented studies, 21 village surveys and 4 village resurveys. Most of these research projects have been taken up by Centre on the recommendation of the Government of India and State Governments of Gujarat and Rajasthan. Some of the projects have also been sponsored by other national and international organizations. The Ministry of Agriculture, Government of India has also assigned to the AERC and the Department of Economics, Sardar Patel University a Cell called the Cost of Cultivation of Principal Crops (CCS) in 1970.



Academic Centres

Centre of Excellence in Applied Polymers and Related Areas

Keeping in view the paramount importance of Polymer Science and Technology, the University has already set up a Centre for Excellence in Applied Polymers and Related Areas with recognition from the UGC with a generous support of Rs.5 crore, thereby providing an opportunity of utilizing the existing potential and strengths of faculty members from diverse fields aimed at: (a) developing high performance polymers for defense, atomic energy, electronics, transport and consumer, and public and public systems-related industries; (b) modelling and computer simulation of synthesis and structure of new polymers; (c) teaching and training; (d) characterizing, testing and evaluating; and (e) developing optimal solutions for industrial and allied problems. The participating Departments are those of Chemistry, Biosciences, Computer Science, Physics and Materials Science.

UGC Centre for Advanced Studies in Carbon Composites and Carbon Nano Material; and

GUJCOST Centre of Excellence in Nano Science and Materials

Recognizing the research achievement of the Department of Materials Science in the area of carbon related research, the UGC has accorded the Department the status of Centre for Advanced Studies in Carbon Composites and Carbon Nano Materials. The Government of Gujarat has also accorded the Department the status of a Centre of Excellence in Nano Science and Materials. This has helped strengthen the activities of the Department to undertake work on application of Nano Materials in Composites and other advanced areas of strategic importance under the programme.

Centre for Interdisciplinary Studies in Science and Technology (CISST)

Sardar Patel University, a public University in the state of Gujarat after the iron man Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel, has a long standing tradition of commitment to teaching and research in Higher Education. By aggressively competing for various developmental schemes of the government and by support from philanthropists, the University has established strong science Departments like departments of Biosciences (Microbiology, Biochemistry, Biotechnology, Zoology, Botany), Chemistry, Physics, Computer Science and Technology (including Bioinformatics), Materials Science (including Nano Science and Nano Technology), Home Science, Mathematics, Statistics and an infant Department of Pharmaceutical Science besides departments in Humanities, Social Sciences, Economics, Business Studies and Management. Two of these departments are recognized as UGC Centres for Advanced Studies; more than ten of them have been inducted as UGC-SAP departments; and a UGC Centre of Potential for Excellence in Polymers has been granted. There are six extension centres, including a unique publishing, since last more than twenty years, six research journals; and the faculty has a fairly high rate of research publications in well established quality journals, resulting into recognitions like national and international awards and prizes, visible h-factors and citation numbers, annually winning of several research projects, nominations and fellowships of learned academies. On the basis of the research performance of the University, recently the Department of Science and Technology of the Government of India, has selected Sardar Patel University under prestigious PURSE (Promotion of University Research and Scientific Excellence) Programme granting Rs. 6 crore.

Having realized the need for a multidisciplinary approach to studies and research, the university is establishing a Centre for Interdisciplinary Studies in Science and Technology (CISST) with a view to promote teaching and research programmes of multidisciplinary nature, in particular, for implementation of PURSE Programme. Under CISST, the university has a long range vision to develop teaching and research programmes in emerging multidisciplinary areas like Bio-Engineering, Bio-medical devices, Nano Materials and Bio-materials, Advanced Ceramics, Pharmaceutical Sciences, Planetary and Earth Science, Defence Studies, Energy Science, Nonlinear Dynamics and Systems Biology. To begin with, the University intends to sail following academic programmes leading to Master’s Degree after graduation in an appropriate branch in Basic Science and Technology.

It offers MSc in (1) Biomedical Science, (2) Defence Science, (3) Earth Science, and (4) Bioinformatics

Besides training research personals, the centre would also make special efforts to train personals for research (producing UGC-CSIR-NET-JRFs- a very important need of the hour). Besides teaching and research, the centre is expected to be a hub for interdisciplinary activities like discussion meetings, lectures, seminars, symposia and colloquia breaking the barriers. The CISST is expected to add up a much desired dimension of multidisciplinary approach to teaching and research towards excellence.

Interdisciplinary Centre for Studies in Social Sciences and Humanities (ICSSH)

Simply put, the term ‘Social Sciences’ is a plural usage that refers to ‘sciences’ helpful to us in the study of various aspects of society, social structures, and relationships within human societies; and ‘Humanities’ is a plural usage which refers to subject-disciplines that concern the larger humanity, i.e., human beings collectively: culture, language, literature, history etc; and together social sciences and humanities enjoy a certain dyadic relation like bread-and-butter and are, hence, two disciplinary categorisations that aim at addressing human concerns to maximise overall human welfare.

We believe that we and our students will face handicap in being useful to our society if we continue to rely on our age-old compartmentalized academics. We had a model available in the form of CISST established for science and related subjects, and felt the need to introduce interdisciplinary approaches for meaningful societal benefits in areas of social sciences and humanities which have been neglected and have suffered in recent past. ISCCH developed out of the good work done by a committee of four ex-Vice Chancellors, SPU appointed to recommend a structure for ICSSH on the lines similar to CISST.

The university has envisioned ICSSH as a school tasked with the conception, germination, incubation, growth and development, and dissemination of knowledge through at least four centres: (1) Centre for Area Studies of Charotar Region; (2) Centre for Studies in Small and Medium Scale Industries; (3) Centre for Comparative Literature, Cultural, and Translation Studies; and (4) Centre for Studies in Pedagogy, Skills Orientation, and Library and Information Sciences. Thanks to a donation of Rs.1 crore by IPCOWALA family and friends, led by Shri Devangbhai Patel, a member of our University Syndicate, we have begun work on establishing an Interdisciplinary Centre for Studies in Social Sciences and Humanities. We have a building adjacent to the Main Administrative Office of Sardar Patel University which houses seven University Departments that fall under thedisciplinary categorisation, viz. Humanities and Social Sciences.

Human Resource Development Centre

Our HRD Centre functions around the basic philosophy of the teacher being central to the higher education system. Since the teacher is the pivot of the educational system, and does not have adequate opportunities for their professional development, the centre works towards enabling teachers who come for training not only to confine themselves to the transmission of information, but also to provide the students with the right orientation to meet the challenges of life so as to enable them to become trained professionals and better citizens.

The HRD Centre in the University believes that a college/university teacher must not only learn the ‘art’ of teaching on the job by emulating outstanding models such as his/her own teachers or senior colleagues, but also learn through hands-on experience of teaching using modern methods and techniques of teaching and learning. It also offers programmes in research methodology for research scholars to undertake advanced study and research in various disciplines. Hence it has in place a systematic plan to organize, implement, monitor and evaluate orientation courses for newly appointed college/university lecturers within the jurisdiction of one or more universities in a state. ASC organises refresher courses for serving teachers, and orientation programmes for senior administrators and heads of department, principals, officers, etc.

Community Science Centre (CSC)

The Community Science Centre was established on 8th of June 2004, and was initially housed in the Department of Physics, SPU, Vidyanagar. The Centre got its present name after a generous donation of Rs. 26/- lakh by Shri Chunibhai Chandubhai Patel (Kotastonewala) of Karamsad. The centre has been recognized as the Anand District Community Science Centre by the Gujarat Council on Science and Technology (GUJCOST) Department of Science and Technology, Government of Gujarat, Gandhinagar. The entre was moved to its present premises in 2007, and has also seen an expansion in terms of infrastructure and facilities as well as scientific activities and programmes spread over the Anand District.

This is the only centre being run under a University set-up in Gujarat. The University perceives such a centre as one that can become an oasis of knowledge, information and public awareness by providing people coming to it with a common platform for discussing issues related to Science and Technology. The working of the centre is generally informal and usually it aims to strengthen science education through various activities.

The mission of the centre is to create interest, enthusiasm and awareness in science including mathematics, by working for students, teachers and common public. The aim is to motivate students and teachers to inculcating in them scientific values and bring out creativity by offering informal and non-formal programmes. Every opportunity is explored to interact with them to discuss matters and issues related to Science, technology and our development. Regular activities are carried out to support Science and Mathematics education especially in schools in Anand district. Our objective is to collaborate with individuals and institutions in the above tasks, true to the spirit of a Community Science Centre.

Centre for Training and Research in Language and Communication (CTRLC)

CTRLC was set up in 2004 along with the ISC to complement the work of the latter. It caters to the development of Communication Skills in English. It has a two-fold aim: (1) to provide training in language and communication to foreign students, various sections of the society such as students from academic institutions, personnel drawn from corporate organizations and industries etc so as to help them develop fluency and accuracy in language use and to overcome the problems faced in communication, and (2) to engage in further research in language and communication on the basis of the feedback it gets on the effectiveness of its programmes through its faculty and trainees on the one hand and client organizations on the other. The Centre has trained three batches of a total of 29 students on a three-month Advanced Certificate Course in Communication Skills in English, besides training 18 Thai and 2 Chinese scholars from the ISC; 11 Doctors and 03 Doctors’ spouses on a request from Anand Consultant Doctors’ Association, Anand from 7 to 22 June 2006 in the academic year 2006-07; and 16 of managerial and other cadre officers of the Indian Dairy Machinery Company Ltd, GIDC, Vitthal Udyognagar in April-May 2010 of the academic year 2009-10. The fee collected from this has been deposited in the CTRLC account in the University and except for the expenditure incurred on the printing of the certificates.

Centre for Excellence in Politics and Public Administration recognized by the Government of Gujarat

The Department of Political Science was awarded a Centre for Excellence by the Government of Gujarat for a project of Research, Writing and Publication on the theme Ethics in Indian Politics and Public Administration with Special Reference to the Lives, Thoughts, and Contributions of Mahatma Gandhi, Sardar Patel, Vitthalbhai Patel and H M Patel.

Centre for Canadian Studies

The University has recently established a Centre for Canadian Studies as a collaborative initiative taken by the Departments of English and Political Science of the University. While the Department of English has been given the responsibility of coordinating the activities of the Centre, all Departments of the University participate in the activities undertaken by the Centre. The Department of English has taken up studies in Multiculturalism, and has organized talks in the past, held workshops, and organized a Symposium with funding from Shastri Indo-Canadian Institute (SICI), New Delhi.

Women’s Studies Centre (WSC)

The establishment of the Women’s Studies Centre in the Department of Home Science was made possible in the X-Plan period thanks to a generous grant of Rs.50 lac vide UGC letter No: C/X-Plan/WS/Home Sci./7518 dated 15 February 2005. The Centre has devoted itself to field studies, organised seminars and expert lectures on various aspects of women’s studies, and is currently in the process of getting two books commissioned by it on history translated from Gujarati into English. The Gujarati and the English versions of the books will be published by the University Press at Sardar Patel University. The centre aims at capacity building in the educated, employed woman with regard to managerial abilities such as communication skills, administrative skills, confidence building etc and along with this facilitating support systems such as research, day-care-centres, old age homes etc. on one hand and on the other, the centre will focus upon entrepreneurship skill building in unemployed women from a slighter wider age group such as adolescents, college girls, housewives and others from different SES. The Centre has identified two categories, namely the educated and employed women and the unemployed women, college goers, teens etc ranging from the literate to the illiterate. Computer literacy has also been identified as an essential skill, which needs to be imparted to women.

Centre for Diaspora Studies

The Centre for Diaspora was established in the Department of Sociology in the X-Plan period thanks to a generous grant of Rs.10 lac for the period up to 31 March 2007. The Centre devoted itself to field studies, and expert lectures covering the Indian Diaspora, and published monographs through the University Press at Sardar Patel University. The Centre organised (a) International Seminar on Indian Diaspora sponsored jointly by the UGC and ICSSR on 4-5 January 2005; and (b) International Conference on Indian Diaspora Profile, Position Diaspora Profile, Position and Problems of Indian Diaspora 21-22 January 2006. Both the Seminar and Conference attracted a large number of delegates from abroad. The Centre continued to work thereafter and held annual conferences. The last three were held in February/March 2012, 2013 and 2014.

UGC-NET/SLET Training Centre

The UGC, New Delhi has sanctioned Coaching Centre for NET/NET-JRF for SC/ST Students and Coaching Centre for NET/NET-JRF for Students from Minority Communities to prepare them for National Eligibility Test (NET) so that a sufficient number of candidates are available for selection of Lecturers/Assistant Professors, and earn scholarships by passing NET-JRF, and the UGC Remedial Coaching Centre for SC/ST Students in the University System under X-Plan. These centres were merged by the UGC in the XI-Plan. The UGC-NET/SLET Training Centre was continued even under the XII-Plan.

Administrative Centres

University Computer Centre

The computer centre of Sardar Patel University is the central hub for providing software and hardware solutions to the entire campus. All the major tasks of various sections like Establishment, Examination, Academic, USIC and Accounts are computerized with the help of the Computer Centre. Payroll processing, Examination Results Processing (Pre, On and Post), Budget preparation, major report preparation, Centralized Admission process, etc. are some of the key activities at the computer centre. Internet connectivity is provided to various Departments and sections of the University by the computer centre. It offers new connections, maintains existing connections and anti-virus solutions. Apart from the regular MIS activities, the computer centre provides assistance in purchasing of computer hardware and software to the entire university.

International Students Centre (ISC)

High quality of education, need-based specialized contemporary programmes and a highly professional work culture in self-financed institutes and programmes have started attracting a large number of students from outside Gujarat. The International Students Centre (ISC) of this University was founded in June 2004 in the academic year 2004-05. It was established by the University: (a) to assist the International Student Community by providing information about the various courses offered, admission procedure, eligibility criteria, fees charged etc, and (b) to arrange for their admissions, help them settle down quickly and happily in their studies, and take care of their welfare.

The University attracts quite a good number of foreign students every year. Since its inception, the ISC coordinates all the activities related to the admission of International Students through a Single Window System. The ISC also coordinates with Indian Council for Cultural Relations (ICCR), Ministry of External Affairs (MEA), and with different Embassies and Consulates for various purposes including assisting the International Students to obtain Student/Research Visa (as the case may be), Scholarships etc. The ISC participated in PIHEAD Programme at the Higher Education Fair organized jointly by UGC and FICCI in Kenya, Mauritius, and Ethiopia etc (representative: Professor Narsimhachari) and in Sudan (representative: the late Professor R K Prabhakar) in 2004-05. Professor H J Jani, who served as International Students Advisor, represented the University in such an Educational Fair organized in Mauritius in 2005-06. Professor J H Khan took over from Professor H J Jani on 23 August 2006 and has been serving as the Honorary Director of ISC ever since.

In 2010-11, we had a total of 46 international students enrolled in the University of whom 12 were ICCR-sponsored and 34 self-sponsored. In 2011-12, these numbers were 17 and 36 respectively; 18 and 37 respectively in 2012-13; 16 and 32 respectively in 2013-14; 25 and 35 respectively in 2014-15; and 21 and 28 respectively in 2015-16. There are currently (2016-17) a total of 32 foreign students enrolled in this University: 09 ICCR Sponsored, and 23 Self Sponsored. 16 of them have been accommodated in D-Type Quarters in the University Staff Colony in order to ensure their safety and security, and easy access to a majority of officers and the Honorary Director of the Centre in case there is an emergency which requires help.

Chairs, Special Centres and Cells

Chairs and Centres

The University has established the following chairs: (1) MBA Chair (Sponsor: Corporation Bank); (2) Bhaikaka Chair; (3) Sri Aurobindo Chair of Integral Study; (4) Dr Baba Saheb Ambedkar Chair; (5) Shri Mota Chair of Extension of Educational Thinking; and (6) Sardar Patel Chair.

It has also established the following centres: (a) CVM Centre for Gandhian Studies; (b) UGC Gandhian Studies Centre; and (c) Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel Studies Centre.

These Chairs and Centres have been established to bring in community orientation to the activities undertaken by the University. Besides these chairs, the University (i) has provided infrastructural facilities for the establishment of Kendriya Vidyalaya (Central School) on the University Staff Colony campus; (ii) supports a small organization called “Sanskar Mandal” which carries out community orientation activities throughout the year; and (iii) arranges endowment lectures for the same purpose.

Internal Quality Assurance Cell

The university has instituted an Internal Quality Assurance Cell (IQAC) with the following objectives, roles and functions assigned to it, under the Chairmanship of the Vice Chancellor. The objectives of the IQAC are two-fold: (a) To ensure continuous improvement in the entire operations of the institutions, and (b) To assure stakeholders connected with higher education – namely students, parents, teachers, staff, would-be employers, funding agencies and society in general – of the accountability of the institution for its own quality and probity. It looks into/provides for/takes steps to foster (i) timely, efficient and progressive performance of academic, administrative and financial tasks; (ii) the relevance and quality of academic and research programmes; (iii) equitable access to and affordability of academic programmes for various sections of the society; (iv) optimization and integration of modern methods of teaching and learning; (v) the credibility of evaluation procedures; (vi) the adequacy, maintenance and proper allocation of support structure and services; and (vii) research sharing and networking with other institutions in India and abroad. Some of the functions being performed by the IQAC are: (a) development and application of quality benchmarks/parameters in various activities of the institution; (b) dissemination of information on quality aspects; (c) organising discussions, workshops, seminars and promotion of quality circles; (d) recording and monitoring quality measures of the institution; (e) working as a nodal agency of the institution for quality relation activities; and (f) preparing the Annual Quality Assurance Report and such other reports as may be decided from time to time.

University-Industry Interaction Cell (U&I Interaction Cell)

The University-Industry Interaction Cell has been established to promote co-operation amongst Faculty members of the University and the leaders of the Industry to achieve technical proficiency and excellence. The U&I Interaction Cell works with the following specific objectives: (a) to create data base on Need Analysis of Industries in the state; (b) to create data base on expertise/facilities on the campus; (c) to coordinate R&D projects/consultancy/ sponsored projects/problem solving between the University Departments and Industries in the area of Product/Process development and technology transfer; (d) to assist in signing of MoU, promote patent awareness and development of IPR/Patents by the University faculty based on their products and processes; (e) to help testing material characterization; (f) to offer training programmes relating to professionally oriented fields for small/medium scale industries; and (g) to keep liaison with various funding agencies and government organizations.

Environment Conservation and Management Cell

Sardar Patel University is the first university in the state to frame its Environment Policy and constitute an Environment Conservation and Management Cell, which is actively pursuing the goals and action programmes detailed in the policy. This initiative taken in 2004 was based on our perception of a university as a seat of higher learning and how it has a three-fold task to accomplish: engage in education, research and extension or out-reach activities in various disciplines of knowledge. It was born out of our belief that environmental aspect should be a part of each of these 3-dimensional activities. Numerous activities like water conservation, tree plantation etc have been conducted as a part of the work of this Cell.

SC/ST Cell

Our SC/ST Cell, constituted in conformity with the norms laid down by the UGC, has initiated programmes to implement the reservation policy for weaker sections (i.e., SC/ST) in the University and colleges so as to provide special facilities to students from these communities for their betterment and welfare as per instructions/orders by the Government of India. The Cell takes necessary steps to display all Notifications/Circulars on all the Notice Boards and provides guidance to the students belonging to SC/ST. It is actively engaged in strictly following and implementing important decisions taken by the University Standing Committee for SC/ST. Besides this, it is involved in the administration of government scholarship to students under these categories.

Special Facilities

NBHM Regional Mathematics Library

In recognition of the committed efforts of the Department of Mathematics in Research, Teaching and Extension, the National Board of Higher Mathematics, Department of Atomic Energy, Government of India has set up a Regional Mathematics Library for Higher Mathematics in the Department of Mathematics. This is a National facility created on the campus. This library caters to the needs of Mathematicians in the Western Region.

Bhaikaka Library: the University Central Library

A unique feature of the library system in Sardar Patel University is that there is a Central Library (Bhaikaka Library) with satellite libraries in the form of departmental libraries in each department. Named after the illustrious founder of the educational township as well as the University, Shri Bhaikaka, Bhaikaka Library came into existence in 1957, with the purchase of 3000 books. The present Library building was inaugurated by the Late Prime Minister, Shri Lal Bahadur Shastri on 31 October 1964. It has two large reading rooms with a capacity to seat 750 students. The stack area, divided into four parts, has the capacity of up to 3,00,000 documents like books, periodicals, theses, dissertation, Reference Books, CDs, DVDs, Video and Audio Cassettes, books donated to the library etc. its membership is open to students, teaching staff non-teaching staff not only in the university departments but also those in affiliated colleges. Computer automation has been initiated with 2,16,000 of the books in the acquisition entered in the computer using SOUL software. Bar-Codes enable the issue counter to scan a document before issuing it out. Facilities like Reading Room, Internet, Women’s Reading Room., Inter-Library Loan Services, Photocopiers, Reference Services and Online Public Access Catalogue (OPAC). One can access UGC-INFONET journals. Some of the Reference Books are fully entered in the server to enable any user to access them. The Library subscribes to 208 Indian and 115 International Journals, making it a total of 323 Journals in all. Its Publication Section publishes 7 Journals and a Monthly University Newsletter. It has published 158 books so far.

Apart from the Central Library, there are Departmental Libraries. The departmental library in almost all departments caters to the specific needs of respective department. These libraries contain recent issues of research journals, textbooks in respective subjects, as well as the books obtained Gratis or purchased from research project/s over the years. They also contain non-traditional reading materials, photocopied and loosely bound editions. These libraries have Internet connectivity, and library staff in some cases. There are reading rooms attached to these libraries, and books are issued to students of the Department regularly on demand.

University Science Instrumentation Centre (USIC)

University Scientific Instrumentation Centre (USIC) of the University was established in the year 1979. Besides this, USIC also undertakes development and fabrication of Scientific Research Instruments especially tailored to meet the need of research scholars. USIC also offers centralized Audio/Video facility, maintaining the EPABX and Telephones Network, Refrigeration and Air-Conditioning Equipments. University Science Instrumentation Centre (USIC) extends its Maintenance, Repairs and Fabrication support Services to all the under-graduate colleges and Post Graduate Departments affiliated to Sardar Patel University in the areas of Electronics, Electrical, Mechanical and Glass Blowing. USIC also extends its services to Non-Affiliated Academic and Non Academic Institutes such as Gujarat Agricultural University, AMUL, ARDA, WALMI, ICAR, Shree Krishna Hospital, IRMA, NDDB, M. S. University, Saurashtra University, South Gujarat University etc. for almost all types of Scientific and Sophisticated Instruments/ Equipments such as Analytical, Electronics, Process Control, Power, Control, Optical, Electrical, Mechanical, Vacuum, Glass-Blowing, PC based Instruments, and Microprocessors.


NSS and NCC Scheme

The University monitors National Service Scheme (NSS) and National Cadet Corps (NCC) in 22 affiliated Colleges. Both our NSS and NCC Units have been doing well in this University.

NSS is an Indian government-sponsored public service program conducted by the Department of Youth Affairs and Sports of the Government of India. The scheme was launched in Gandhiji’s Centenary year, 1969. The main aim is to develop student’s personality through community service by working for a campus-community linkage, and thus to extend dimensions to the higher education system and orient the students youth to community services while they are studying in education institutions. Its activities have been divided in two major groups: regular activities and special camping programmes organised every year in the University.

NCC aims at developing character, comradeship, discipline, a secular outlook, the spirit of adventure and ideals of selfless service amongst young citizens, besides helping create a pool of organized, trained and motivated youth with leadership qualities in all walks of life, who would be willing to serve the nation regardless of which career they choose. It also provides an environment conducive to motivating young Indians to join the armed forces. However, its objectives are (a) to create a human resource of organized, trained and motivated youth to provide leadership in all walks of life and be always available for the service of the nation; (b) to develop character, comradeship, discipline, leadership, secular outlook, spirit of adventure, and ideals of selfless service amongst the youth of the country; and (c) to provide a suitable environment to motivate the youth to take up a career in the armed forces. Many students in the University have found entry into the armed forces including our paramilitary forces as a result of successful training under the scheme.

Learn and Earn Scheme

A “Learn and Earn Scheme” has been introduced for students studying in Sardar Patel University or those, residing in University Hostel, who can now take up assignments such as administrative work of various kinds like supervision of the reading rooms/halls in Bhaikaka Library, work related to computers like word processing, and such other administrative work in their spare time over and above their academic work. The aim of the scheme is to enable these young men and women to be ever ready to raise economic output on their own while working toward earning their respective degrees.

Free-Studentships in Self-finance Programmes

The total number of free-studentships available in each department is 5% of the total strength of the department. Free-studentships are awarded to the postgraduate students reading for their Master’s degree, who are otherwise not eligible for the Economically Backward Class Free-studentships or Scholarships for the Scheduled Caste, Scheduled Tribe and other Backward Class students.

Free Studentship to Wards of Cadres III and IV University Employees

The wards of Cadres III and IV employees of the University who are studying in the University are reimbursed the full tuition fees in case they are under the grant-in-aid system and 50% of the tuition fees in case of those in the self-financed system.

Sports and Cultural Programmes

Sardar Patel University believes in ensuring the all-round development of its students and hence lays emphasis on organizing both sports and cultural events on a regular basis. We have provision for athletics and both indoor and outdoor games. Intercollegiate Tournaments are organized every year. These include the intercollegiate Athletic Championship. Coaching Camps are organized for various games with the help of University Coach and Honorary Coaches from the colleges. The University also organizes Intercollegiate Youth Festival Competition every year for the students of the affiliated colleges and departments and a team is deputed every year for participation in the West Zone Inter University Youth Festival Competition.

Support Services

University Museum

The multi-disciplinary University Museum was established in 1949 by the Charutar Vidya Mandal under the name of Museum of Art and Archaeology. It became a part of the University on 1 July 1960. In its nascent stage, it received a unique gift of 2,600 metal antiquities and other works of art collected from various countries of South East Asia, by Dr NA Thoothi who was then Reader in Sociology at the University of Bombay. The founder of the township of Vallabh Vidyanagar and the first Vice Chancellor of this University, Shri Bhaikaka, was blessed with good knowledge of Sanskrit and Archaeology. He himself found some important antiquities for the museum like specimen of minerals, rocks, fossils, synthetic and natural crystals, herbariums, paleoliths, microliths, old bricks, post-shreds, old coins, sculptures in stone, wood and metal and also utensils, religious articles, arms, shields, a palanquin, a grain of rice with painting of Lord Mathavira, anatomical specimens of humans. It houses a Gallery on Life and works of Sardar Patel and there are letters of felicitations received by Veer Vitthalbhai Patel and Shri Bhaikaka.

The museum has been and is being further developed as an adjunct to University Education. Temporary exhibitions are arranged on various topics on “International Year of Child” Photographs, monuments of Gujarat, India, photographs of Marines Archaeological Project at Dwarka etc. Ravishankar Kalaguru’s painting on his 100th birthday, Exhibition on animals, birds on Museum Week, “Thai Textile” (personal collection of Miss Prepassorn, Thailand) Traditional painting form Orissa. The staff educates people about snakes by giving them a live snake demonstration. The museum has received gifts like coins, manuscripts, big and small sculptures made of metal or stone from people and gathered some of it through field work as well. The museum holds exhibitions regularly, and some of these are “Kutchh: Before and after Earthquake” in 2001 and 2002; “Body Odyssey” in 2001; “Flora of Vallabh Vidyanagar” in 2003; antique and artistic inkpot, pens, pen-stands in 2004; “Life and Environment of Charotar” and “Kailas-Mansrovar” in 2005; paintings and murals in 2005; earthquake in North India, Pakistan and Afghanistan in 2005.

Community Radio Station

The University has taken the bold initiative in setting up a Community Radio Station with the following vision in mind: (1) imparting education in the university campus and adjoining villages in terms of dissemination of information/knowledge, lectures, debates and other formal and non-formal education; (2) for the general community development programmes; (3) for empowering students and people by providing education and training through the use of radio; and (4) for focussing on issues relating to education, health, environment, agriculture, rural development, societal upliftment. We have on offer education-related lectures and discussions; societal activities-related programmes; student-organized and related programmes: quizzes, discussions, debates, songs, entertainment etc; expert lectures; career guidance; campus news, university news; information-relation programmes; admission process and course-related information; health tips; talks on students’ difficulties; talk by/with retired teachers and senior citizens; institution-related information; talk with bright and successful students, gold-medal winners; and university results.

Our Community Radio Station, “Radio Campus 90.4 FM”, is a non-commercial venture established by University’s own sources in 2004 with the permission of the Ministry of Information and Broadcasting, GoI. It is the first Community Radio Station in Gujarat State run by the University since year 2004. The station is operated on FM Band of Radio Set at 90.4 Mega Hertz Frequency. The Station has a broadcasting power of 50W and a coverage area of 15Km radius in Anand. It has now become one part of overall strategy for the development of students and teachers’ skills. It affords the students an opportunity to become its active members and develop a skill of communication. The daily program schedule of radio station covers Lectures, Debates, Panel Discussions, Traditional Songs, University News, Cultural Programs, Health related programs, Institutional Profiles, Admissions related information etc. There are. Five Daily Transmission slots of an hour each and everything entirely in the student domain.

University Health Centre

The University has a very good Health Centre, which was established in 1962. It has been recently renovated and updated. The main objective of the centre is to provide primary prevention against diseases, and to take care of routine health problems. Free medical check-up is carried out for all the staff members and all the students of the University and affiliated colleges. Free medication is also provided for general and common ailments.

University Health Centre carries out detailed evaluation of all aspects, for Hypertension and Diabetes Mellitus. It maintains separate files for all the enrolled patients. Regular check up, necessary investigation, counselling, health education, necessary advice and treatment are provided free of cost to all Hypertensive and other patients. Our medical officer attends and also makes presentations at National and International scientific conferences regularly to update the knowledge in Hypertension and Diabetes. It provides necessary guidelines and treatment for hypertension and diabetes mellitus patients. Further it also organizes various check-up programmes to rule out Diabetes Neuropathy, Diabetes Nephropathy, and Diabetes Retinopathy for all diabetes and hypertensive patients. The Centre screens all diabetes patients with the help of ophthalmologist on first Sunday of every month.

The Health Centre has the facility of Electrocardiogram (ECG) and IV Fluid Supplement to patients suffering from Cerebral Malaria, Typhoid, and Dehydration due to Vomiting and Diarrhoea etc, which obviates the necessity of referring the patients to other Hospitals for indoor expensive treatment. It carried out screening of Bone Mass Density (BMD) for osteoporosis this year on 7 August and 12 December. It carried out the screening of Diabetes Microalbumiuria on 20 August 2006.

University Press

The University Press is an Auxiliary Service Unit of Sardar Patel University, established to cater to the printing needs of the University. The twenty employees working in the different sections of the Press like Hand Composition Unit, Computer Unit, Plate Making Unit and Binding Unit. The University Press isolated Examination Unit, which comprises Data Entry – Computer Unit, Proof-reading Hall, Photocopying/Printing Unit and Block-wise Bundling Room. All the Question Papers are printed on the day set for each examination paper in the secure environs of the Examination Unit. The Press also prints routine stationery for the University Office Administration and Departments, the monthly University Newsletter, and the University Journals, Admission Information Booklet and Application Form as well as PhD Theses and Research Publications under various UGC schemes.

Career and Counselling Cell

A counselling and placement cell has been established in the University under the coordinatorship of Dr D J Karia of the Department of Mathematics, SPU and a small team. The cell conducts tests, offers counselling services, and seeks to make placement of the students largely from the sciences every year.

Guest Houses

The University maintains 4 Guest Houses: Old Guest House which has 03 full-furnished, AC rooms each with attached washroom facilities; VIP Guest House which has 10 full-furnished, AC rooms each with attached washroom facilities; Visitors’ Guest House which has full-furnished rooms, four of them are AC rooms, but each of them with attached washroom facilities; and HRD Centre Guest House which has full-furnished rooms, each of them with attached washroom facilities.


The University maintains 10 Hostels: Old Men’s Hostel, Nehru Hall (Men’s Hostel), BSc BEd Hostel, CTE Hostel, SSF Hostel (flat-type) for research scholars, MBA (NRI) Hostel, Eklavya Hostel, University Ladies Hostel, University Ladies (NRI) Hostel, and New Women’s Hostel. All the 5 Men’s Hostels put together have 249 rooms accommodating 521 students. The only University Ladies Hostel has 102 rooms with the capacity of accommodating 318 students. All the basic facilities like Television Hall, Water Cooler, Water Heater, Employment News, News papers, Nutritious food, adequate electricity, all time Security and Neat and clean atmosphere are provided in Nehru Hall Hostel.

Sardar Patel Maidan

Sardar Patel Maidan houses the Yugpurush Vivekananda (YUVI) Sports Complex, which has courts for Indoor Games. Facilities for Outdoor Games on the Maidan include 01 Athletic Track (40 mts for all events including Cricket and Football), 01 Tennis Court (Cement Court), 02 Badminton Courts, 02 Kabbadi Grounds, 02 Kho-Kho Grounds, 02 Handball Grounds, 02 Basketball Grounds (Cement) with flood lights, and 1 Table Tennis Hall (Indoor).

Employment Bureau

We have an employment and information bureau on the campus thanks to the Central and State Governments. It has an Employment Officer of a gazetted rank. The Bureau provides information related to employment opportunities, offers vocational guidance and assists unemployed students to find gainful employment. We are happy to be able to place on record our appreciation of the valuable services it provides to our students registered with it.

Banking Services

Although many of the nationalized banks have their branches in Vallabh Vidyanagar, banking services began to be made available on the University campus in the early part of the 1990s when the Vallabh Vidyanagar Branch of the Corporation Bank, a public sector bank, opened its extension counter in the building that currently houses the Postgraduate Departments Business Studies, Mathematics, and Statistics. About 2 years ago, this was upgraded into an independent Branch by the Corporation Bank. This facility has enabled the University to pay monthly salary of its teaching, administrative, and Class IV staff through this Bank. Almost all of our Banking needs are met by this Branch.

Postal Services

Vallabh Vidyanagar has a Post Office situated in Mota Bazaar. This proved to be a hitch and the University entered into correspondence with the Gujarat Postmaster General’s Office over a period of time. This bore fruit finally when an extension counter of Vallabh Vidyanagar Post Office was inaugurated in August 2007 in the building that housed the Postgraduate Department of Biosciences in the past before it was moved to a more spacious premises. This has enabled the University to avail of all the important postal services like sending registered mail, money orders, postal stamps, payment of telephone bills etc.

University Canteens

In view of geographical spread of the campus as 3 small sub-campuses, the university has created a mini-canteen on the main campus, a mini-canteen at the MBA Department, a canteen outlet on the area housing Humanities and Social Sciences, a mini-canteen at the Computer Science Department, and a mini-canteen at the Bioscience Department. The University area is interwoven with the Vallabh Vidyanagar Municipality area, with the result refreshment facilities are available in abundance around the campus.


A Windmill is set up by the Physics Department to generate power on experimental basis with totally indigenous know-how and technology which is much more economical and efficient in comparison to such windmills available in other countries. This has been done to generate electricity and we are happy to be able to record that the Physics Department has, in many ways, become self-sufficient in generating enough electricity for its own use.

Sanskar Balwadi

The university has set up Sanskar Balwadi in the University Staff Colony for the children of the employees in the University. It has a building of its own and a ground where the children in the nursery can play. The ground there is also used for organizing cultural programmes for the employees and their families, and for organizing garbas, farewell functions etc during any given year. Interestingly, the working of the Sanskar Balwadi is entirely in the hands of a committee elected/selected by the employees themselves, and is provided whatever support it may need by the University.

Apna Bazaar

The university has set up a separate consumers’ cooperative society viz. Sardar Patel University Employees Consumers Cooperative Store called Apna Bazaar to provide grocery and other items at the economic rates. This has been housed in the University Staff Colony.

Flour Mill

The university has also set up a flour mill, also housed in the University Staff Colony for the benefit of the university employees and their families so that they do not need to go elsewhere to get their grains and pulses ground.
